Protect Yourself from a New Identity Theft Tactic

At Sikorsky Credit Union, keeping your accounts safe is always our top priority. Cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to trick people into giving up sensitive information, and one recent scam is targeting unsuspecting internet users through fake “Verify You Are Human” tests. Here’s what you need to know and how to protect yourself.
How This Scam Works
Fraudsters are creating fake websites or compromising legitimate ones that display phony “Verify You Are Human” tests, similar to CAPTCHA. These fake tests prompt you to enter a series of keystrokes, such as:
Win + R → CTRL + V → Enter

Following these instructions can unknowingly install malware on your device. Once the malware is on your computer, it can steal usernames, passwords, banking information, or even give criminals direct access to your device. This scam is especially risky because it mimics a normal website step, making it easy for users to be tricked.

How to Protect Yourself
Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to protect your personal information:
  • Be cautious of unexpected instructions. Never enter keystrokes or commands requested by pop-ups or robot verification tests. Legitimate websites will never ask you to perform these actions.
  • Perform regular scans. Run antivirus and malware checks on your devices to catch potential threats early.
  • Avoid suspicious links. Don’t click on links in emails or pop-ups you weren’t expecting, even if they look official.
  • Monitor your accounts. Regularly review your credit report and bank statements for unusual activity, such as accounts you didn’t open.
Pause and Think Before You Act
If you ever feel uncertain about a website, simply pause and close the page immediately. Taking a moment to double-check can prevent a lot of headaches later. Protecting your personal information is one of the most effective ways to stop fraud before it starts.
