Understanding Trigger Leads

Have you ever applied for a mortgage or loan and then suddenly started getting calls, texts, or emails from other lenders you’ve never contacted? If so, you’ve likely been the target of trigger leads, and you're not alone.

Let’s explain what trigger leads are, how your information gets shared, and most importantly, what you can do to protect your privacy.

What Are Trigger Leads?
When you apply for a loan, the lender pulls your credit report to help assess your application. This credit inquiry is seen by the credit bureaus (like Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion), who may then sell your information to other lenders looking for people who are actively shopping for credit. These leads, called trigger leads, contain your name, contact information, and some general financial details, but not your full credit report.

These lenders use the data to try to win your business by sending you competing offers, often before you’ve even finished your application.

Sikorsky Credit Union Does Not Sell Your Information
Let’s be clear: Sikorsky Credit Union does not sell your personal data. Ever.
We value your trust and take your privacy seriously. Trigger leads come from the credit bureaus directly – not us.

We understand how confusing and frustrating these offers can be, especially when you’re making a big financial decision. That’s why we want to empower you with ways to take control.

How You Can Opt Out of Trigger Leads
You have the right to say no to these types of offers. Here's how:
  1. Go to optoutprescreen.com
This is the official website to opt out of pre-screened credit and insurance offers. You can choose to opt out for 5 years or permanently.
  2. Call 888-5-OPT-OUT (888-567-8688)
This phone number is run by the credit bureaus and can be used to start the opt-out process.
  3. Register with the National Do Not Call Registry
Visit donotcall.gov to reduce telemarketing calls in general.
